WHAT IS
SCHEMA THERAPY?
Schema therapy (ST) is a comprehensive and integrative approach that draws from various therapeutic models to form a sturdy framework for treatment. The term 'schema' is rooted in the Greek language, signifying 'form' or 'blueprint.' Schemas take shape during childhood, particularly in individuals whose fundamental needs were not adequately fulfilled, and persist into adulthood. These schemas act as filters, influencing one's perception of self, others, and the world. Maladaptive schemas manifest as enduring patterns that can detrimentally affect various facets of life. The primary aim of schema therapy is to pinpoint these schemas, understand their origins and current impact, and facilitate the development of effective coping strategies. Ultimately, the goal is to equip individuals with the tools and skills to address these schemas in a healthier manner, ultimately striving to fulfill those core childhood needs.
The approach of Schema Therapy (ST) is incredibly meaningful for both patients and therapists due to its focus on the impact of early childhood experiences on our personal schemas. This understanding provides a deeper sense of empathy and insight into how these deeply rooted patterns influence our lives, as well as the significant effort required to instigate lasting change. Schemas essentially represent our early survival strategies, highlighting the importance of evolving these patterns to better navigate our current realities.
