The Different Parts of YOU (and me): Internal Family Systems (IFS)

YOU AND ME PSYCHOLOGY believes in approaching mental health with compassion, neutrality, and a desire to empower our patients. We offer educational resources and insights to help you understand various psychological concepts and therapies. Today, we'll explore the transformative power of the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model.

IFS invites us to view the mind as a complex system of interrelated parts, each holding specific perspectives and memories. Underlying these parts is our core Self, a source of inherent wisdom, compassion, and healing potential. This approach recognises that even parts stemming from challenging experiences hold value and a positive underlying intent.

As an evidence-based therapy, IFS guides individuals towards understanding and healing wounded inner parts, fostering greater inner harmony and balance. This model's principles extend beyond clinical settings, offering a framework for personal growth and enriching relationships. IFS embodies values like confidence, calm, compassion, courage, creativity, clarity, curiosity, and connectedness (the 8 Cs), making it a powerful tool for professionals across diverse fields.

At YOU AND ME PSYCHOLOGY, we are passionate about making IFS accessible. This program caters to mental health professionals, individuals seeking growth and healing in relation to their trauma. Rocco has undergone advanced training in IFS by none other than Frank Anderson MD, a leading practitioner and writer in the field. Frank is not only highly respected for his expertise, but also known for his openness and honesty about his own trauma history. Additionally, as a fellow member of the LGBTQIA+ community, Rocco feels a particular connection with Frank's work and its potential to support individuals with similar experiences.

In alignment with the IFS Institute's mission of promoting Self-leadership, we provide insightful resources and facilitate discussions to deepen your understanding of the inner workings of the mind.

Illuminating key IFS concepts:

  • The Mind's Parts: IFS views the mind as composed of distinct parts, each with its role and history.

  • The Core Self: Beneath these parts lies the true Self, possessing profound healing potential and inner strength.

  • Positive Intent of Parts: All parts, even those causing difficulties, aim ultimately to protect us. IFS seeks harmony and understanding, not the elimination of parts.

  • Healing Process: IFS therapy focuses on accessing the Self's wisdom to understand, heal, and integrate wounded parts.

Types of IFS Parts:

  • Exiles: Hold past hurts, often requiring care, compassion, and reconnection.

  • Managers: Proactively work to shield us from further pain and overwhelm.

  • Firefighters: React to strong emotions, sometimes through impulsive or self-protective behaviours.

We invite you to embark on a journey of self-discovery and healing with YOU AND ME PSYCHOLOGY. Stay tuned for more valuable insights into mental health and well-being!
